I'm looking for some nice font suggestions for a book that has avant-garde texts ranging from poetry and parts of philosophical novels to unclassifiable combinations of text and pictures. The book will also have pages showing pictures from Kurt Schwitters collages and actual pictures of his books (poems).
Not sure if i should use a serif font or not...all suggestions more than welcome

If it’s such a miscellanea, I would go with a slab serif.

Harriet from Okay Type; Academica, Hercules, or John by Storm Type; Monotype Modern; URW Antiqua; Edison from Linotype; Paperback by John Downer for House Industries; Whitman, Ibis and Heron, Elmhurst or Proforma from Font Bureau.

I love Adobe's Arno Pro - good choice for poetry - given its somewhat calligraphic look.
Hoefler Text - with all its trimmings.

What Riccardo said.
The pictures will have much old type, so create a typespec which is diametrically opposed. As the subject matter is apparently from the early 20th century, then something new and recent would work well.
Sanuk, for instance, which I first came across, in use, by Marian Bantjes, for the ID she created for TypeCon in Seattle.
Paul Rand might have used Univers Bold.
