Character complexity and redundancy in writing systems

Reading the german magazine GEO I came across the following research of Changizi/Shimojo:

http://www.pubs.royalsoc.ac.uk/proc_bio_content/abstracts/changizi.html

It sounds interesting to me.

Does anyone know of similar or other researches about the process of reading?

Thanks,
Michael

For all those, who are interested in the complete article: It’s not necessary to buy it from the website.

On Mark Changizi’s own website http://www.geocities.com/changizi
the article can be downloaded as a ZIP/PDF.
You can find it under “Patterns across writing systems, and what it tells us about visual recognition”: http://www.geocities.com/changizi/char.zip

There is also an article about the shape of letters: http://www.geocities.com/changizi/junctions.pdf
