and spread the word to other type lovers!!!

Hi,
I'm new to typophile but I was curious whether there were any typeface designers out there who have opinions on the copyright law surrounding typefaces. The following are some questions I thought might propel the discussion:

Firstly, as you see it, do you feel well protected by the copyright law concerning typeface design?

What do you see as the main flaws of the way the law works to protect you as a designer?

Do you feel the main problem to be piracy or plagiarism?

Why do you feel so many people are willing to appropriate typefaces without the artist/designer's permission?

How do you feel would be the best way to resolve this ongoing problem? Does it come from a change in legislation, or an attempt to change people's attitudes...?

Thanks for your time guys and gals.

Hi all, designing a logo from a drawing I made,
I need to make the type more legible for the client,
any advice is welcome! The company name is liquid violet.
They are a young

The below was sent to the client as explanation:

'The logo here is typographic. A bespoke
typeface has been created for Liquid Violet
which draws on liquid forms taken from the
name. This logo represents a more modern
approach. Please note the typeface can be
made more legible if desired and the word
‘liquid violet’ can be placed within the
logo-mark.'

Liquid seems to be more legible than violet right now?

Thanks all.

Hi there,

I'm really needing to find out the font used for 'wedding' in this header for www.stylemepretty.com. If anyone happens to know what it is, I'll be eternally grateful!

The header can also be found on this page: http://www.stylemepretty.com/wedding-inspiration/

Looking to identify this type that's commonly used for headlines in NY Magazine. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hello,

This is my first post on the forum. My name is Aaron and I'm a Graphic Design student @ Roger Williams University. I just recently tried to clean up and organize all my typefaces on my MAC. I have quite a hefty collection. After not finding out what I'm looking for in various searches here, I would like to ask a couple questions about type management.

The first is, Am I better off applying imported type to Suitcase Fusion or allowing Fusion to read from the directory? Every time I attempt to activate a large selection of typefaces, the system gets bogged down and takes forever to activate them.

Hi,

I am a student, currently in the process of purchasing my first font pack. After doing some research on this forum I came across two particular options that seems to fit what I need

Adobe FontFolio Education Essentials,

or

the 1000 fonts from bitstream that are stored with CorelDraw Graphic Suite X5

now my question is which would be better for someone in my position?

Should I stick with the Adobe collection because of the versatility of it's collection, or get the CorelDraw fonts because of the vast immensity in the scale of what it offers? Which of the two would offer me a better ground as far as building up my skills, and collection from?

The successful typefamily Skolar by David Březina, has been extended to a pan-European character set. This version supports around 90 languages that use the Latin, Cyrillic, or Greek scripts, featuring over 2400 glyphs. The Cyrillic was awarded a Special Diploma at the international type design competition Modern Cyrillic 2009 and won the first prize in the Cyrillic text type category at Granshan 2009. As a bonus, Skolar PE can correctly place any accent from the font above or below all Latin letters, a useful feature for many linguistic applications.

Engraving workshop this Friday. This is a breezy overview of what is contemporary, commercial "engraving".

Friday, March 18 @ 6:00pm
Loyola University New Orleans
Media Room 1
Monroe Library

(This workshop was also recently given at)
Tuesday, March 1 @ 5:00pm
Southeastern Louisiana University)

Each workshop will include:

• what is engraving and why do we love it.
• historic specimens of weird and fantastic engraving.
• contemporary applications for engraving.
• how to prepare art for engraving, and the various kinds of "engraving".
• how to engrave...
• ...or, how to work with an engraver (so you just have to design and leave the engraving to somebody else.)

I have been corresponding with Hoefler Frere about customizing the standard character set for Whitney. Whitney has a default character set and an alternate set. We want to have some of the alternate characters to replace their default characters in the main set, and are told that choosing an alternate character can only be done manually, one at a time, through the glyphs palatte in InDesign/Illustrator.

I know Its a blindingly obvious one but I have gone blank completely.

Thanks

Here is proposal to make type trade more suited to nowadays:

Aware of the overwhelming aspects of type mutations of type and times forthcoming, we decided to make evolve our trade policy as following:

1. We remind to all of you our values of independance & strive of high standards of quality
2. We took into consideration the fact that the type market is now split in two: branding vs texting
3. We shall further fight against type piracy, which is no noble hacking but first and foremost stealing our work, preventing us from earning revenues we need to live decently and fairly from our skills and business
4. Therefore we decided our clients and public should be even better guided according to their actual needs and affordance (the price the customer can afford to pay)

Thank you in advance for the help.
can anyone help me id this font?

Hello everyone.

I'm making a PHP application to generate text labels. The PHP libraries seem to don't support OpenType features.
Now I have no problem working with unicode index to display the standard characters.
But, as far as I know, the OpenType features are name based.
For example: if I want to display a ligature «my» I have to replace «m» and «y» unicodes indexes by «my» unicode index.
The problem now is I don't have unicode indexes on this characters and I can't reffer to them by their names.

The questions are:

Is there any existing unicode for these glyphs and I am missing them?
Do I need to reencode all the glyphs?
Which is the best way to reencode a font and/or generate unicode names for this purposes?
Is there any standard?
