Help with Swashes, please!

Forums:

Please help! Are there any rules or formatting structures for using swashes to fill in negative space for a scrip or brush layout? Like are there any tips or do-and-don'ts of creation? I want to use some to add to my layout but i don't know where to begin or which ones to use if the font does not contain alternates or glyphs included in the original. Thanks in advance!

Modular Scale Calculator

Forums:

I been using modular scales in my layouts and typesetting recently and have built a calculator to help produce double stranded scales.

I have also added in the calculations for ems and base 16 ems as I often need them when building websites.

Figures can be entered as straight numerals or in picas and points, as in 10p6 for 10 picas and 6 points.

Anyway I thought I'd share it here incase someone else may find it useful.

I would also appreciate any feedback or suggestions.

Technical Document Redesign

I work as a technical writer at a security firm. One of the documents our firm uses in all government contracts is called PVT Procedures. This document contains test procedures that our installation technicians use during equipment testing events. Whoever designed said document was more familiar with the equipment concerned than they were with principles of typography and document formatting. I am now redesigning the PVT Procedures layout and so seek directive input from you all regarding what I've done so far. I've attempted to attach sample before and after images. Hopefully you will be able to tell which is which. Note that I'm limited to working with MS Word on all documents.

Book of theater plays layout critique

Hello!

This is my first post, so I apologize if I miss some typophile-related etiquette. :)

Anyways, I need to design a book of eight theater plays. They are adaptations of kids' classics like Mary Poppins, Robin Hood, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and the like by a croatian author. However, the book is not targeted (only) towards kids, but to anyone interested in making these plays come to life---actors, directors, etc---and friends of a local town theater these plays originate from. The editor would like for the book to be as inviting as possible to read.

Plays are cheerful in tone and have a bit of a rural and/or 'retro' feeling to them. There is a subtle environmentalistic message which expands through all of the plays in the book.

Layout/typesetting critique

Hello, first time poster here! :)

I'm looking for some critique on the typesetting & layout of this white paper. Initially I wanted to do a two-column layout, but the text has so many breaks that the columns didn't flow very nicely, so I'm kinda stuck with one-column, which seems a bit boring to me.

The fonts used are Neutraface 2, Belizio, and Chronicle Text for the main copy. This will be mainly for screen reading (that may change) so I didn't do facing-pages.

Any comments/critiques are welcome!

Non-breaking paragraphs

Forums:

Dear Typophile users,
I am wondering if there is a way to set the text without the paragraph breaks (or returns) using pargraph marks instead (like a pilcrow or such - ¶) in an automatic way (without having to search and replace it with find and change in InDesign).
In that way making a solid block of text.
Here is an example (Symbol without indent or line break):

I look for a similar thread but could not find it...
So any help to make it easier to achieve will be welcome.
Thanks in Advance

Typesetting and Layout + Inferior text.

Hi Typophilers,

I am keen to seek your feedback on the below problem.

When setting text in a document and the sentence ends with a scientific inferior number (SINF) / Subscript (SUBS), or writing a list of items that contain SINF characters, is it better to write using general punctuation, or use the punctuation provided in SINF/SUBS lookup?

I have provided a sample sentence in the image attached. The sentence at the top used general punctuation for all, whereas the lower uses all SINF/SUBS punctuation. Style Manauals do not provide advice on this particular topic, hence, my question.

Thanks in advance.

Adjust billing on a layout project?

Forums:

Hey, Typophiles! Turning to you for advice: I bill by the project, and have just finished laying out a report that I billed at 2.25 days. Only problem is that (for once!) I overestimated how long it would take – I really worked about 1.5 "days" on the project, including admin.

My question: do I follow-up once the project closes and adjust my fee downward, making clear the reason? Or do I take the money and run, since we all agreed on the scope and the rate in advance?

Computer Wallpaper Critique

I have designed some computer wallpapers and would really like some feedback on them! I am also thinking about putting these into print and start selling them to a niche market on the internet. So, I need to know if what I'm designing is complete crap that won't sell. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. There are four of them live right now. Check them out here!

Thanks!

a Good match for Klavika

Forums:

Hello,

I've done some research but not sure if I'm choosing the right aesthetic choice. Being a student Graphic Artist for some time now, yet I still have much to learn.

My question, I'm designing a film-magazine cover, contents, and several spreads for my portfolio to graduate from school this year. Moreover, I have selected Mr. Olson's Klavika typeface for call-outs, headlines etc, but I;m not sure what serif face I use for body copy that will compliment Klavika. As of this moment I'm using Caslon 240 I believe.

Are there any suggestions that I may consider?

Best,
Aaron

Looking for someone to design my album sleeve.

Forums:

I need someone to design and do the layout for my album sleeve. My artist name is Slow Medicine and the artwork is as per my photo on this site.

As you'll see,the front cover still needs some work. But as the design is for a wallet format for a CD, there are three more pages to lay out (we have additional art work). So there's a tracklisting on the back page, a page of info on the inside left, and then the third page is where the CD itself is housed.

Oh and I have a - very small - budget.

Anyone interested? Email me on toby.manning@blueyonder.co.uk

BTW: the music is art rock (I can send anyone who's interested some examples).

help on children's book layout

Forums:

I would really, REALLY appreciate any insight you are willing to dish out. I'm attempting to put together a book of fairy tales. It's the first time I've done something on this scale, and I'm not sure if what I've put together is working or not. The book will be 6 x 9 inches. The type is Arno, 13/16.2 (the weird baseline is simply so the grid would fit the page exactly), with occasional bits of Phaeton (title page, cover, and page numbers, basically). Oh, and I'm using fleurons or whatever they're called from several different fonts for the story title decorations. Thanks so much for helping out a struggling-to-learn flunky.

Layout for a welfare and social policies journal

As it happens, one of the jobs that pay my bills is laying out a journal on welfare and social policies published twice a month by a no profit research institute.
The journal is entering its fortieth year of continuous publication, and, while studying how to deal with the “death of print”, we would also like to refresh its printed appearance.
My goal is to add some white space/flexibility and some typographic niceties (such as proper small caps and old style numerals).
Constrains are mostly due to a next to inexistent budget (cram as much text as possible per page, use only already available fonts) and a mostly aging readership (don’t make the text too small).
Attached there’s a first draft of the revised layout.
Any kind of criticism is welcome.

Page Layout Project

Forums:

Hi everyone. I'm a student at Savannah College of Art and Design and I was hoping you guys could help me out. For my digital page and web graphics class, I have to make a new ad for a campaign. I am doing the "Perfect" Patron ads. Here's an example of what I mean

Examples of using Compacta

Hi guys,
I am new to this forum, but I have been reading and learning as an anonymous visitor for quite a while. Thank you, guys, for letting your awesome expertise be available to dilettantes like me!

Here's my first question:

Do any of you know any good examples of the use of Compacta. I recently used it for a project, after having researched which font to use for a few months, and can't entirely stop. Here's what triggered my use of the font, a cover I spotted while the camera trucked over a magazine rack in Jean-Luc Godard's "Sympathy for the Devil" (1968).

Type and layout for two-version textbook?

Forums:

I'm writing a textbook for middle school students studying English as a foreign language. It's a speaking workbook, and for such a book to be useful, it needs a substantial teacher's edition. But I have so many questions about how to implement this!

1. I have 6 types of information that need to be added to form the teacher's edition. These include short answers, paragraphs, and tables. On most pages there's enough extra text that if I assigned all the teacher components a common design feature, like italics or boxes or a different type, it would look very strange. Any ideas?

2. With different text the teacher's edition doesn't quite match with the student edition; however I can make each lesson (2-4 pages) be the same amount in each version. Is that good enough?

Burning Questions of a Young Designer - Layout

Forums:

Dear Typophiles,

It was with much pleasure that I discovered this website and the wonderful enthusiastic discussions that typographers have here!

As a designer in her first year of professional work, I've encountered a question that has gone unanswered for some time.

Having read books by great designers (Vignelli, Bringhurst etc.) as well as this forum I became enthusiastic about the use of baseline grids in my work. This technique had not been taught at university and once I began to practice using the baseline grid in my personal work I found that I could hardly do without it.
