Hello everybody,

I've been reading a lot about typefaces and how different kinds can be combined in order to create layers of meaning. Type foundries usually suggest pairings for their own fonts, most notably Hoefler & Frere Jones and Font Bureau. I am looking to create an unusual mix of moods for a personal branding project:

- Hearty, friendly
- Weird, quirky
- Contemplative, dramatic

You can think of this mix as the equivalent of a Wes Anderson, Sylvain Chomet, or even a Spike Jonze film. Sort of like what film critic Peter Rainer writes about Spike Jonze's film, Being John Malkovich:
“It is hard to mix moods -- the film is manic, subtle, comic and vaguely sad -- but [Jonze] does it masterfully.”

It’s been raining heavily in New York’s Hudson Valley for what seems like weeks now. Oppressive humidity has blanketed the air with a thickness that thwarts all efforts to be a productive member of society. And the extended forecast doesn’t indicate it is going to end anytime soon.

Today’s long-awaited announcement of Hoefler & Frere-Jones’ Cloud.typography came as a welcomed procrasti-distraction from the constant hum of desk fans, window ACs and cranky, bored offspring.

For any NYC area typophiles still looking for a way to study typeface design this fall: SVA will be offering a version of my sold out workshop from this past summer, Turning Letters Into Type, on Monday nights from Sept. 20 through Dec. 13 (and again in the spring, so the two could also be taken in sequence as beginner and advanced versions).

There are still some spaces available and registration is here. The summer workshop was super fun, be great to have you along this fall!
