Hinwil

Hinwil is a hand made Mécane-Manuaire hybrid typeface created using the iPad. It is part of an ongoing personal project that I am working on currently to create a set of fonts using the touchscreen interface, some of which I aim to re-work into pro-versions over the coming months. The font is available for all to use for free and can be downloaded via the link below.

Sion

Sion is a geometric, experimental typeface created using the touchscreen of an iPad. The font is available for all to use for free and can be downloaded via the link below.

By my count there are now three Hebrew fonts that are licensed with open source licenses:

  • The SIL (Summer Institute of Linguistics) Ezra SIL font
  • David Perry's Cardo (using SIL's Open Font License version 1.1)
  • and the Culmus Project's Ancient Semitic Scripts family of fonts including Keter YG (using GPL v2 with the font exception clause).

Hi, name's Lars Johansson. ( *ducks for obligatory Swede-jokes*)

I found this outstanding site trough some searching on the web, for resources and information on fonts and typography.

I'm a hobbyist web and graphical designer, as well as an amateur comic-book letterer and colourist.

I'm also an editor for a comic-book fanzine here in Sweden, and one of my duties is the design of logos and promotional fliers. As such, I have been reading up on what is essentially considered to be the VERY BEST of the best, of the best, ( and on and on ;) ) fonts that a modern graphical designer needs to have in his arsenal.

I want to know if any of you pros think free fonts are worth using.

I downloaded about 100 fonts from DaFont - the majority were poor; some were good; some were excellent. But according to some designers, free fonts never cut it.

What's your opinion on this? Is it nearly impossible to find good typefaces which are on par with commercial fonts, or not?

If anyone could put up links to good free font resources, I'd be grateful.

Anyway, I'm waiting for your responses.

Every Friday we give away a free tee at TypographyShop. http://bit.ly/aWP8Ga

Sign up to win a free shirt. Each Typography Friday we'll randomly select a winner to be awarded the shirt of his or her choice.

There's no catch. If you're not on our mailing list we'd love it if you'd pop over here and sign up, but it's not necessary.

Have a great weekend.

Good morning everyone.

I'm going to design a 12 pages newspaper – compact, 24*34cm, 9.4"*13" – for a not for profit organization. The association is devoted to the promotion of its territory: from conscious tourism to the preservation and valorisation of their local artistic and environmental heritage.

Being an organization funded by its own members, I have been asked to use only free or cheap typefaces.

I think I need a good sans serif, with a regular and condensed family, and a serif for body text. I'd like to have some personality on the pages, starting from typography, but I understand their budget issues.

Have you got any idea to spare with me? Thank you very much.

Hi All,

I've become obsessed with fonts, but I'm not a designer or anyone that uses them to make an income in any way so I stick to free fonts.

I was hoping someone might be able to tell me about a font similar to PMN Caecilia that I could get for free. I'm in love with the font, but of course I can't find it for free.

Much appreciated,
Courtney

I am happy to announce Dezen, my new release!

Dezen is a contemporary, mechanical grotesque typeface. Its letters were first constructed from individual modules and then optically refined to enhance its rhythm. Its tight letter spacing and narrow proportions make the typeface particularly well suited for display sizes and headlines. When you add spacing, font can be used for shorter amount of text, bigger than 12 points.

The Dezen type family consists of a wide variety of styles – solid and stencil. The Dezen Pro subfamily combines all 4 styles (Solid, Stencil 01, Stencil 02, Stencil 03) in a specific sequence, which originates a “pattern” for the alphabet (or dezen, in Slovak).

Dezen Pro Regular is for free!

Hello There!

I'm making my first font, and releasing betas as I make any little bit of progress (in the same way as open source projects do, since my background is PHP programming).

Is a nice bold condensed script with plenty of ligatures and final forms alternates.
For me is a learning experience, so any feedback is highly appreciated.

You can download it for free from the lobster font mini-site.

Thanks!!!

if you like modern and geometric fonts and blackletter as well, have a look at the typophile post »Fracmetrica Black .otf«

the free-font »Fracmetrica Black« is a modern and geometric blackletter with several opentype-features like ligatures, case-sensitives, text figures.
It's kind of condensed and has a high contrast. The typeface's construction is based on an isometric 60°-grid.

Check it out my first commercial font!

Its an heavy display font.

Santa is late but he's finally here! The OpenType Basic version, full commercial licence, of Adelle Bold and Bold Italic can be downloaded free of charge at TypeTogether's website.

The award winning Adelle is a dynamic slab serif designed by Veronika Burian and José Scaglione. While it is conceived specifically for intensive editorial use, its personality and flexibility make it a real multiple-purpose typeface. The intermediate weights deliver a very legible and neutral look when used in text sizes, providing the usual robustness expected in a newspaper font. The unobstrusive appearance, excellent texture and slightly dark color allow it to behave flawlesly in continuous text setting, even in the most demanding editorial applications.

2 Free typeface Offers

Greater Albion Typefounders have just launched two free typeface promotional offers. Details can be found on their blog.

Sintesi. Sans meets serif.

You would like to express tradition by using a contemporary font? Sintesi might be exactly what you are looking for.

Sintesi stands for synthesis: the unification of serif and sans-serif into a contemporary font, which surprises with different facets depending on its application.
In copy size Sintesi performs like a sans-serif. It is a compact and well readable font that fulfills all requirements of modern digital media.

In larger sizes, Sintesi unfolds its traditional character. Now, its strong contrast and the perceptible feather-ductus stand out clearly, as we appreciate it in a historical old style face.
