// CONTEST TERMS

Judging // Punchcut will judge the entries, keeping in mind the popularity of the entries in the thread. We'll determine which design(s) get printed and the quantity of the print run.

Copyright Retention // Participants (those who submit entries to Typophile) grant Typophile permission to use the artwork/design for promotional use, including a t-shirt, as we see fit, for applications not limited to apparel. Any mentions of products or promotional items will be accompanied by proper credit to the designer (in online product listings, etc). Participants retain copyrights and Typophile agrees not to sell or transfer our usage rights. (In other words, we don’t require exclusive rights, just unlimited usage.)

Prizes // This is a battle. There are no prizes (unless some benefactor makes something available for us to give away). We will mail the winner 3 tees in your choice of sizes.* Your finished designs will be appropriately credited with your name or your firm’s name as you specify. By participating you pledge that your work is of your own design and further, that fonts or other rights-protected imagery used in your design are licensed for such use by you or the organization you represent.

*UPDATE! In addition to receiving three t-shirts, the winner will also receive their choice of the most complete digital type reference in the world, FontBook from FontShop International or Made with FontFont, a beautiful showcase of the history and influence of award winning foundry FontFont.

Thanks so much to FontShop for this generous offer.

**UPDATE! OK, so we aren't done there. Threadless has been keeping their eye on this battle, they like what they see and have offered to give our winner a $100 gift certificate to their shop! What a deal - our winner is going to be the happiest little typographer, and the hippest.

A big THANK YOU to Threadless for their generosity.

How many colours are allowed to print?

There are no set rules for inks. But production will have to be factored into the feasibility of running a print job.

All of these old shirts have been plenty tasty but favorite of the old shirts is still the "I like Type". Hmmmm, can I come with anything?

So Haley, do you have a Hot Dog font in the works? Maybe it could complement Ketchupa, Mustardo, and Mayo. :-D

Sorry for crowding this topic this way, but I've changed my mind about the first one and I can't edit it anymore.

Fiasco Luvs Typophile.

I'm not actually submitting this as I don't know squat about typesetting something like this. But I did all this work and thought I'd post my idea anyway. :-)

A week on Typophile.

Frederico, I am not 100% on the words but it is a great looking design.

Thanks Eben!
I know Fiasco can be a tricky face...
It reads:

"YOU ARE NOT MY TYPE.
BUT WE ALL [HEART] TYPOPHILE"
See you soon!
Cheers!
Fred

Someone needs to make one that says "chuffed".

Frederico, I could read it just fine. I think your face is fantastic because it looks so odd/fun and yet reads very nicely - to my eyes. I just wasn't sure I want to have a shirt that "You are not my type".

Here is a mixed metaphor:

ChrisL

Here's my submission, using Meta.

Can anyone comment on the production? Design for solid screen printed inks or other?

I think it is solid screen printing according the the website Joe listed.

ChrisL

James (jupiterboy) we've always done solids in the past. We could be convinced to do something else if the design warrants.

Also, no need to limit to a t-shirt. If your design works better for a hoodie, a zip-up sweatshirt, a tank dress, a messenger bag or a hat so be it. T-shirts happen to be the most universal, but again, we could be convinced of the merit of something else.

Here's the Typophile Tee that sold out faster than any other. The California Job Case tee, designed by Graham Hicks, modeled by Joshua Darden. (You can see Graham's original entry, including the pied job on the back on his site: http://www.itchyrobot.com/californiajob/)

It's definitely due for a reprint.

One more whimsical design. Reads: Hello, My favorite font is

Eben, now I see what you mean. Do you think it sounds rude? In portuguese it doesn't.
I'll think of something else if I have the time. Cheers!

I'd like it if Sharon's won just so I could see everybody wearing a t-shirt with a compliment directed at me! xD

I was starting to lose hope, I thought we'd never see another battle again… I need to think about this!

A proposition which is a bit provocative, but seems right in these troubled times – at least to me.

I just had the coolest thing happen. Nora fixed my submission. So I'm entering it as a joint submission. Here's the shirt with a close up of her revised version. Thank you, Nora!

The revised A Week On Typophile -

Great image, NielsW... Now if you could just replace the books with some computers, it might be REALLY provocative. :-)

So here comes my first contribution. Go T!

ƒ

Joe, what are the dimensions of the printable area for a medium size tee? I don't want to scale down out of exsistence some features of my most awesome winningest dzgn ;)

Could you please give me an approximation on that? Would it be something like 8" by 8"?

Hiroshige, I'll talk to our screen printer, but I know it's bigger than 8 x 8 in. (more like 12 x 12 in.) There's a standard screen size that, as a default, we'd like to hit. However we're prepared to make exceptions for great concepts.

Looks more like 12" x 12"

ChrisL

Can't edit my post. I didn't have the right font when I posted above. Now it should be right.

Hi,

this is my proposal.

best
Piero

www.pierodibiase.it

Sharon, "Very Inspiring" could be extended to close the gap on the last line, force-justifying it. A perfect Tee. Sincerely, "Fiasco" reads beautifully! Chris, I could use that tool! Jos, smaller is better, but don't burn money ... please.

All my typographic work is hand cut in linoleum - hence no vector-illustrator .eps.

Is a hi-res bitmap scan acceptable?

Mitchel Ahern

I tried to sum up some of the emotions we can deal with when working with type.

Is a hi-res bitmap scan acceptable?

If it is high rez- enough I expect it would be. A high rez can be converted to vector as well... Let's see!

Hint: Design something that is wearable and not promotional. (No .com!)

This one was submitted by Gareth Finucane (garphynk):

Thank you, André. That is very nice of you to say. Nora fixed the typesetting from my original disaster. It was amazingly kind of her, I thought.

Sharon

Here's my {T}-shirt.

It's Cool Gray 4 U.

Eric (Ehague)... don't you want Typophile to have more traffic and new members?

So here are two ideas. I think I will see if they read before I send a final. I’ll pull one if we are not allowed multiples. Good to see everyone’s ideas.

I'm also not equipped to do the eps file editing etc., but here's the text of my idea, in case anybody wants to run with it:

HAHHAAOHAOOAO
:-Ď
typophile

.

That's the text size of Williams Caslon. If people like the concept I'll do a higher contrast display version for "Typomania?" But I have to get back to kerning :)

These are cleaner images than the last. Sorry I couldn't edit. Maybe a moderator could remove the first version?

This is Williams Caslon Text size. I will do a higher contrast display version of "Typomania" if it turns out that people like it.

For the insatiable appetite in all of us.

; )

almar, Re: "Rated T ": very funny, nice one!

I heart the heart/world icon.

Thanks Sihep, appreciate it!

I came up with this predicated on the idea that we typographers don't blush easily.

Of course I thought of placing the ratings label on the front, but sitting in front of a computer 10 hours a day hunched over as people wandered by, it made more sense to put it on the back.

~ A

Thanks Joe,

Afterall, this site is all about "Type Love" now, ain't it?

insatiable

Power up for the Marilyn Chambers reference if intended.

I heart the heart/world icon.

If that is a reference to my design it is the flaming heart. I've substituted a chain of Univers Ts for the crown of thorns. I also worked with the T in place of the cross or a piercing knife.

I assumed it was almar's world/heart that Joe was referring to?

ChrisL

I’m sure. I didn’t see the heart at first, just the open/close quotes. Oh duh, on the back. Nevahmind.

What a great way to end day one! Thanks for all the entries so far.

Love that movie rating pastiche from Almar.

Sawasdee everyone, this is my...

Theme:
Your Type - Our Type
Your Life - Our Life

Sawasdee' mean in Thai = Hi, Hello

Up to now ... my favourites: Fredos Tee-T, and the backside of Almars shirt – waiting for more ;-)

Ricardo: thank you. It would be indeed very nice ! (I just need to find some 6-7 portable macs for a photo shoot ! (won't be possible without massive popular demand).

for the rest: the «…is the neue black» tag-line was used 8 years ago by Designer’s Republic, and the Pantone reference is been around everywhere for 2-3 years now. (sorry)

Revised and Sent. I like Jos’ stack best so far.

Good Morning everyone, well at least here on the US eastern coast.

I have added two spin-offs of the movie rating tee, the first being the movie rating by itself on the front, for those that really want to make a statement about their professed obsess…uh,…I mean "love."

The second spin-off below is with the movie rating treatment on the back and an interplay of the single quotes symbolizing our true feelings about letter forms everywhere.

Enjoy once again!
~ A

I like Jos' shirts and Almar's T rated best so far.
I'm off and out of the country (no laptop) for a few days, so haven't got time to think for a suitable suggestion.

Almar, I really like the design! I think the modification to the quotes was a good move. I see not only a heart, but the subtle shape of a nibbed pen.

Thanks everybody and keep those submissions coming! :)

Thanks for the nod Zara!

> Love that movie rating pastiche from Almar.

Don't want to be a spoil-sport, but the Rated T has been done before by Cheshiredave, and very well so -- he takes the movie reference a tad further.

Re: California Case
> It’s definitely due for a reprint.

YAY!!! Mine is really starting to wear out, and it's a massive hit. Everybody digs it.

Haley, I think sites like Fonts.com and MyFonts should use hot dog bar charts for their most popular fonts list.

Quick idea, in-between projects here at work!

YAY!!! Mine is really starting to wear out, and it’s a massive hit. Everybody digs it.

Mine is looking good now that it is getting a little crumbly. My shirt with the sort on it blew a hole under the arm. I liked the shirt stock better but it didn't last so well.

One more and I’ll put this idea to bed.

Great ideas, everyone! Faves here are from andalepedro, Sharon, and almar (the one with the quotes on the front).

David, "More Ümlaut!" is the new "More Cowbell!"

Jupiterboy, that's the best iteration yet.

hi everyone this is a first post :^),

i like andy's and henry's works

and here is mine

I dig the half-tone screen, Jupiter!

I agree. That is sweet.

I was noodling so this isn't serious but just for fun...

This could be rolled a few different ways. But here is the general idea.

I like "More Umlaut". That's awesome.

I really like your entries Jos.

Here is another one.

ChrisL

This is probably cost prohibitive. But, House has actual tags sewn onto their schmancy shirts. This would need something like that.

blank on back.

-E

The tag on the sleeve is an very interesting approach, Tiffany.

~ A

Great Tiff, now I have that song in my head. =)

I like your new one, Jupiter! Very cool.
