Potter versus 3D print designer, reflecting on us.
Posted 7 Nov 2014 - 11:35am

I found the parallels to calligraphy versus type design quite revealing and enjoyable.

Need a high-quality font that looks like Kirvy :-)
Posted 6 Sep 2014 - 9:26am

It doesn't have to be a commercial font, but it has to be actually good.

A reading test of sorts...

Could you please tell me what you read this as?

Serifs like Egyptian 505
Posted 2 Feb 2014 - 9:52am

So what are some fonts with serifs like in Egyptian 505?

I guess I'd call them adnate slab.

On [un]even color
Posted 22 Sep 2013 - 12:54pm

In typeface design the conscious appeal of even color is subtly broken to deliver subconscious functionality.

At a basic level this breaking is done unwittingly via the idiosyncrasies of compositional methods, such as a physical marking tools...

If the font below is derived from another, what font might that be?

Color to help line returns during reading
Posted 11 Sep 2013 - 8:21pm

I was surprised to note that the colors didn't seem to bother my reading process.

Basically I see it as a way to save space and/or page transitions and/or...

Let's help Yahoo see the light
Posted 26 Aug 2013 - 8:14pm

Sometimes the best way to help somebody open his eyes is to give him an unexpected gift.

Unless it's all an act and there's an actual design firm that's going to save the day at the very last second (not that all design firms are capable of...

H&FJ's Greek and Cyrillic for Whitney seem to be a product of considered research:

At the limits of screen rendering...
Posted 1 Jul 2013 - 1:11pm

Most of us already knew it, although some of us wouldn't admit it (and some still won't): If you know what you're doing, when you approach the limits the rendering superiority of Windows is very apparent.

Finally something worth reviving...

Spanish = tilde

Italic Angle Variance (Genzsch & Heyse)
Posted 31 May 2013 - 3:08pm

I was sent a scan of the typeface Mediaeval-Kursiv from a 1930s Genzsch & Heyse specimen book, and noticed something interesting: up to the 20 point size the Italic angle is about 24 degrees, but the 28 point Italic (the largest shown) is about 18...
