Favourite Type Foundry List
Commented on Tuesday, 21 February 2017 - 4:10pm

Hello griffisse. I think the term you are looking for is “type designer”, not typographer. The former design typefaces, the latter composes the text – much like Leica make photographic cameras and photographers uses them. There are thousands of people...

More upright axis in small size masters?
Commented on Friday, 3 February 2017 - 7:21am

Thank you so much for writing, Fred. As I wrote, I was not sure of the origins of this in Quadraat. I have noticed it in many other types too. In my own feeble attempts at drawing a serif typeface, I’ve shaped the head of ‘g’ independently because I...

More upright axis in small size masters?
Commented on Friday, 3 February 2017 - 4:12pm

Thanks for chiming in, Fred.

Hrant: I hypothesize that extreme details (which in some cases might be the contrast axis) would benefit from being toned down as the size gets smaller, but I am not concluding – just asking questions: For example...

Start Grotesque

How far back are you going with this? There is so much to explore, but still hard to be consequent: The comma originated from a lowered, reduced, virgulae (slash). W was two u’s merged together. Many such historical letter variants have their own...

A good alternative to Myriad?

FF Milo
FF Kievit
JAF Bernini Sans
Fresco Sans (Maybe a bit flavourful, but I’ve gotten a lot of milage out of this one. Exquisite design!)

Which typeface goes well with Aperçu?
Commented on Monday, 6 April 2015 - 5:39am

Aperçu is just like Piffi allround spice: goes with everything, but also tend to make it all taste exactly the same.

alter kerning in existing otf font?
Commented on Monday, 23 March 2015 - 5:41pm

If this is Adobe Garamond, you can do the adjustments yourself, or pay Adobe or another type designer to do it. I would be happy to accomodate you. Drop me a mail if you need a quote.

Webfont alternative to Domaine Sans?
Commented on Monday, 9 March 2015 - 8:59am

How about Vinter? Manually hinted, but it is so thin you should really only use it for big sizes.

(Edit: My memory of the lightest Domaine weight didn’t match reality. Vinter is too thin. I might...

Does this already exist?
Commented on Friday, 27 February 2015 - 11:28am

Yes, there are thousands of light bulb logos, but I think your symbol has enough potential to outshine – no pun intended – most of them. The brush stroke feels natural and pulls it away from...

How can I remove all hinting data?
Commented on Friday, 20 February 2015 - 3:11pm

You can use TTX or DTL OTMaster to inspect the font files.

Dynamic sans-serif display. Who knows?

— Edit: I got an untrusted connection with the newsletter link. That miniscule a is very distinctive.

Soft geometric sans (like Rotunda)

Not that close to Futura, but you could have a look at our Telefon. Very subtly rounded corners.

How to scale font fallback to fit the original font?
Commented on Tuesday, 27 January 2015 - 5:09am

The apparent size and position of the letters at a certain point size (or pixel size), is determined by the size of the letters – for Latin fonts, the lowercase letters in particular – in relation to the units per em (UPM) and the vertical metrics in...

Circle guide technique ?
Commented on Tuesday, 20 January 2015 - 1:28pm

The technique is called “post-rationalization”.

Too many type faces?
Commented on Tuesday, 13 January 2015 - 10:45am

Public service: Typographers and type designers are not the same, just as photographers and camera makers are not the same.

A dystopian nightmare
Commented on Wednesday, 7 January 2015 - 1:58pm

Ah. I forgot this board is pretty much broken. Apologies for the large image.

Some additional comments: The thinning of joins is not primarily inspired by pen traces – and hence, does not necessarily occur where expected. This makes me a bit...

Dear Christian,

You can see the G in context in the PDF attached to the first post.

A dystopian nightmare
Commented on Saturday, 10 January 2015 - 3:29am

Interesting. Care to explain what you see as similar?

Christian, I did look closer at that Q, and the U and S. I also massaged the G a little bit. I don’t think the U can be much wider than this. The shoulder gives it so much more white inside...

Can Futura be used for a website? Specially as a body text?
Commented on Monday, 29 December 2014 - 4:16am

Nothing here indicates bad hinting, save for perhaps the treatment of the B across weights. That’s nitpicking though, and I don’t even know what system this is rendered on. Linux? If that is the case, font hinting instructions doesn’t work anyway –...

The distinction between transitional and didone
Commented on Wednesday, 24 December 2014 - 2:45pm

I heard you like transitions.

Design principles for screen?
Commented on Thursday, 27 November 2014 - 12:01pm

Dear Emmanuel,

I don’t think PX Grotesk is a very relevant example. I like it very much. However, it is not drawn for, but inspired by, the æsthetics of lowres. I would rather look into Font Bureau’s RE series, or other...

Any font without closed counters for a laser-cutting project?
Commented on Thursday, 20 November 2014 - 3:55pm

Alex, we’d be happy to modify type from our catalogue to fit your needs, or – if the budget allows it – create something new.

Because they don’t give a damn about the license. This marks the day the EULA died.
