Serif and Sans Combo for a Two-Column Science Book
Posted 23 Oct 2014 - 1:23pm

I'm going thru my type library, intent on using types I've not used in, like, forever, if ever. Though I love Univers--and I believe this book will have scientific formulae in it--with an Old Style serif--I also like the idea of trying something I've...

When Did Macintosh OS Change Early, If Not Original, System Fonts
Posted 13 Mar 2009 - 6:26am

Specifically, does anyone know when Avant Garde got dropped from the Mac's roster of system fonts and why? I've found something on my machine called Avant Garde Gothic. Is that supposed to be a replacement? Or the original renamed?

Thank you....

Juxtaposing Old and Contemporary in a Book's Design
Posted 10 Nov 2008 - 7:21am

Of course, this is not a new subject to typographers, much less type designers. But it's the first time in a long time that I've consciously given thought to it. I'm presented with a book that gives me the opportunity to play off the "oldness" of its...

Any Recommendations for an Economical Collection of Typeface Families?
Posted 11 Feb 2008 - 7:35am

Although many are shopworn by now, one of the best gifts I ever got was when Adobe included a large chunk of their then-Postscript 1 library on, I believe, an Illustrator upgrade CD some 10 or so years ago. I'm wondering whether anyone knows of any...

Recommendation for a Type for Training Material?
Posted 8 Feb 2008 - 6:42am

My first thought was, not specifically, but something with similarities to New Century Schoolbook. I realize it’s kind of a trite face by now, ubiquitous as it is on so many computers, but there's also a comfort in its familiarity. And its open,...

Anyone Hate Goudy Old Style?
Posted 11 Nov 2007 - 12:02pm

After reading some about Frederic Goudy, I was struck by how prolific he was, how he had a tough breaks with fires destroying his...

What Kind of Order Do Some of You Work in When Designing a Typeface Family?
Posted 3 Oct 2007 - 10:01pm

I'm reading like crazy. Now I'm into Letters of Credit. One of the things that Tracy seemed to be saying is fine type design does not include letting the software you're using run routines to proportionally increase and decrease the size of...

Can Anyone Recommend a Calligraphy Kit Text?
Posted 25 Sep 2007 - 9:19pm

I'm interested in a combo that includes a basic set of pens or whatever, and a text that will take me from beginners' exercises to working on some serious letterforms before sending me out on my own. I've decided I want to get that sense of how the...

I Ought to Be More Modest, But ...
Posted 16 Sep 2007 - 9:35pm

I was interviewed by Paula Berinstein of The Writing Show recently, before I actually began to frequent Typophile, which explain my answering her question about knowing any designers of types in the negative....

Are Most of You Skilled at Calligraphy?
Posted 14 Sep 2007 - 8:04pm

I have FontForge and potrace up and running; and I’ve begun a tutorial to get my feet wet with FontForge. I also feel as if my reading is beginning to pay off. That is, I'm starting to notice some things I like he looks of in types. The fact remains,...

Installed FontForge on A G5 Macintosh; Want to Install AutoTrace
Posted 12 Sep 2007 - 6:40pm

Anyone gone this route? Can you tell me where to go for a Macintosh (UNIX, I guess) package to install AutoTrace? Is there a guide of some kind somewhere that explains the process? FontForge was relatively easy to get up and running, but the packages...

FontForge as a Typeface Design Environment--Good Idea, Bad Idea
Posted 25 Aug 2007 - 4:05am

I've been having a running conversation on the Design forum about my burgeoning interest in typeface design--I am a book designer and page layout artist. Initially, of course, FontLab Studio comes up as the software package of choice for professional...

So What Are You Thinking When You Decide to Design a New Typeface?
Posted 18 Aug 2007 - 6:51pm

To the tune of an old, old Genesis song: "I can't draw, I can't paint. Only thing about me is the books that I make."

So what I'm saying is, I'd never think to design a new typeface. And I wonder what might go thru the mind of someone getting...
