I went to school to be a painter back in the days when painting was declared dead and Vito Aconci was piercing himself and vidiotaping it on my campus. . . I really just wanted to be a painter. I very reluctantly got into graphic design/typography, etc., etc. back in the seminal days of desktop publishing and have been resisting it ever since (20 years). I’ve finally surrendered and made peace with my career (Just don’t ask me to go see “Helvetica:” that’s where I draw the line). I still keep a painting studio and sneak out for hours on end to ride my bike so as to feel like a living human being.
