Spacing (width, sidebearings) and kerning workflow
Commented on Wednesday, 22 August 2012 - 7:20am

Sounds good. In my case it'll be more geared at a display font but I was thinking if I get the spacing even and optically correct that I could track it in for larger sizes. I'm more interested in the process of adjusting the side bearings and kerning...

Spacing (width, sidebearings) and kerning workflow

Thanks for the tips guys. I started by zeroing out the LSB and RSB and then worked with the o's and then n's and used those as a start. It's a great learning process.

Need alternative to Courier and complementary sans
Commented on Tuesday, 2 March 2010 - 7:51pm

I like the unchanging line widths of Courier (gives it a very technical quality). Unfortunately American Typewriter does not share that same quality.

Here is what I have thus far. Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

At the print shop where I work this effect is mostly done with using a spot varnish on top of the black to produce that look when caught in the right lights. As cuttlefish mentioned though for a larger run, like with a magazine, you're probably best...

I find it very hard to read and this is already at a very large size. Unless you are using it big like this on posters or something I think it will not come across well. On something like the web or a business card it's not going to be legible, I fear...

Very nice indeed. You pull off the elegance needed on a wine label very well. It would be nice though if these were smaller so we could see the whole image at once.

Tintin,

First off I think the logos look good but I do have a few suggestions.

The first logo looks a bit more playful and less upscale than the latter. I don't know the client like you so it may work for them. It feels like it's trying...

I believe the flash part used for displaying pictures and stuff is SlideShowPro http://slideshowpro.net/) meaning it's not really something he can change I don't think. As for the site and work I think it's nice...

I don't really think the typeface for the date and place is working with the one used on the rest of the piece. Try using complimentary typefaces or just use the same one throughout. There needs to be either a certain contrast or unity to make things...

Hiroshige: First of all I've never seen the Ultramar logo before so it's definitely not intentional. I did extensive studies on eagles and this pose is far from unseen. I felt it was a strong enough posture without being completely aggressive as seen...

Ironically it's not an American company, it's Canadian, heh but maybe that point is still applicable. I'm not sure how they'd feel about too much of a western feel but I could play around with it. I was thinking a little more classy and corporate...

Ok I've been tweaking the eagle a bit, tried to address the feet issue. Plus some other minor stuff that was bugging me. I think I still have some work to do on it such as...

Asvetic: Very nice edit. I'm still learning continually about typography and design and had this strange idea that I had to use two fonts together that were almost identical just one being sans and the other serif. I'm still unsure of how the...

Yes the URL is difficult to type as you have to keep hitting the 'e' so many times. The thought of using a sans crossed my mind but I feel it might not look as strong. Any suggestions on some faces to try out? I will have to play around with...

It's been a long time since I posted here but I'm hoping I can still get some help. I went in quite a new direction and this thing has been sitting around for a while. I'm trying to wrap it up as the client wants to start using it for some stuff. Any...

Lex: Thank you, I'll look into those faces.

jupiterboy: 1) Likely not. I'm also curious the origin of the name but I have to work with it 2) That's a possible idea. Would tie in a bit of the driving part. 3) I'll check it out, thank you. 4) I...

Hiroshige: I'm not exactly sure what you're getting at. What's been done before? Having an eagle for a logo? There have been countless companies with eagles for their logos. I don't feel that mine shares much in common with that one.

Here's a...

Basixone if you are just picking fights you might want to properly construct a sentence. "make sure learn how"?

As for the logos I prefer the original letter mark but instead of the "one" written like that how about a nice bold 1 instead? I do...

Kerning help please
Commented on Wednesday, 13 February 2008 - 8:17am

I'm no pro and wouldn't mind getting a more technical guide to how to approach kerning but optically it looks like the EA might be a bit tight.

Take a look at my logo and give your opinion.

I think your last one is probably your strongest one (one with just part of the '46' orange). Looks pretty strong to me. I think the way the inner line curves out at the top of the 4 could use some minor tweaking. I think it should follow the curve...

The script face looks a bit like it is just a cheaply auto-traced vector version of something. It doesn't look very refined. You seem to have a lot of different fonts going on in the design. I'd try to unify it a bit, personally.

Steinbach Logos Revisited
Commented on Saturday, 2 February 2008 - 3:25pm

As for the logo and people claiming it has know creativity, I think what the point of the 2nd and 5th logo is the look of a river/brook/stream. Steinbach is translated as Stony Brook and that's what Steinbach was built along.
