Programmatically building an encoding for Fontlab
Posted 25 Feb 2012 - 9:26pm

Is there a stable, recommended way of programmatically creating an encoding within Fontlab? That is, instead of loading from an .enc file using encoding.Load(encodingFile), I want to build up the EncodingRecords from various parameters.

Duplicating kerning classes in Fontlab via script
Posted 8 Oct 2011 - 11:23am

So I see that a FL font object has a "classes" attribute that's a list of the classes in the font.

1) Is there a way to filter this list to only see kerning classes?

2) When I try to copy kerning classes via script, e.g. —

Fontlab: how to import OT features from external fea file using python macro
Posted 31 Aug 2011 - 8:12pm

I know how to compile OT features from inside a python macro:

Fontlab also provides codes for the menu commands OTFeaturesNew (33222), which resets the...

can I script the FontLab "save as" behavior?
Posted 15 Jul 2011 - 8:24pm

Using python in Fontlab, I understand how to save a currently open VFB, or save a currently open VFB under a different name.

What I don't understand is how to get the "save as" behavior: keep the current VFB & its windows open, but give it...

How to suppress Fontlab dialog about regenerating OT kern table
Posted 23 May 2011 - 12:12pm

In Preferences: Generating OpenType: Kerning, I have checked the option that says "Generate OpenType "kern" feature if it is undefined or outdated."

Nevertheless, whenever I generate the font, at the end it pops a dialog saying that the kerning...

Posted 26 Apr 2011 - 10:40am

1) Other than the lack of support for most OpenType layout and substitution features, what are the special considerations for making sure fonts work well in MS Office on Windows? For instance, is there any weird behavior around vertical metrics,...

The US Supreme Court requires briefs to be set in "Century family (e.g., Century Expanded, New Century Schoolbook, or Century Schoolbook)". (Times New Roman is not acceptable.)

What are the preferred Century fonts out there? I like Font Bureau...

has a font foundry ever sued someone not covered by a EULA?
Posted 21 Mar 2011 - 2:44am

I'm aware of foundries that have sued customers who are covered by a EULA (for instance, the customer who buys a single-user license but then installs it on 100 machines).

Are there any known instances of a font foundry suing an ...

fonts that permit editable embedding?
Posted 15 Mar 2011 - 2:38pm

I assumed that nobody offered fonts licensed for editable embedding.

But I learned this week that all the Adobe Originals allow it.

Are there other foundries that make some part of their library available for editable embedding?

Automatically updating the font directory with revised OTFs (OS X)
Posted 21 Feb 2011 - 8:29pm

When working on a font, I like to increment my source files with a two-digit version number (foobar 02.vfb, foobar 03.vfb) so I can generate test OTFs with a version number.

The annoyance is that after I generate, I always have to drag the new...

Where does Type 1 hinting make a difference?
Posted 20 Feb 2011 - 12:04pm

I understand what Type 1 hinting is and why it was important in 1992.

But none of the devices I use on a daily basis pay attention to Type 1 hinting.

So is there a class of modern devices that still care about Type 1 hinting?

Or...

Mixing Garamonds in "The No-Asshole Rule"
Posted 6 Nov 2010 - 3:58pm

I was examining a paperback copy of the book "The No-Asshole Rule" in the airport. I was curious how you get a whole book out of a title that seems fairly self-explanatory.

The text was set in ITC Garamond, which would be bad enough on its own...

the theory that lowercase letters are easier to read than caps
Posted 26 Aug 2010 - 2:09pm

Most of us are familiar with the theory that lowercase letters are easier to read than caps because they have a varied contour (ascenders & descenders vs. all letters the same height).

These days, how accepted is this theory? Has there been...

Letterpress printers: What is leading made of?
Posted 21 Jun 2010 - 8:58pm

It's not quite a "who's buried in Grant's tomb" type of question -- I used to do letterpress printing in a cold metal shop but I haven't retained this datum. The one lettepress printer I asked so far didn't know the answer.

Most type is cast...

Best practices for laserprinting fonts on Mac OS X?
Posted 1 Sep 2009 - 8:50pm

After 10 yrs in the wilds of Windows I returned to the Mac at the beginning of this year. For the most part I'm happy, with one glaring exception --- I am stunned at how difficult it is to get good, consistent typographic output on a laserprinter....
