Streamlining Arabic script text and font technology
Posted 14 May 2009 - 6:00pm

I throw some ideas here, to whom it may concern!

The current font and text rendering technology has been developed with Roman script fine typography in mind. Naturally, when exposed to the expansion and international needs, it has developed...

Alternate characters
Posted 8 Feb 2009 - 10:12am

I was asked to provide an alternative Arabic (Persian) glyph for zero for mathematical expression. Zero in most font faces is shaped as a rather large dot. This is confusing for its use in mathematical expression, in which, it is often used...

Arabic web fonts
Posted 11 Nov 2008 - 7:49am

I have an idea to chew on.
Let's produce a font, or a series of fonts specifically designed for the web. Then give the package to makers of operating systems, windows, mac and linux, to include in their system font package.
This way, the...

OT 'ignore' lookup
Posted 19 Oct 2008 - 2:34pm

Let's say I want a substitution except after a space or at the beginning of the line.
I write something like this:

lookupflag IgnoreMarks, RightToLeft;
ignore sub space A';
sub A' B by C;

How do I...

OT language tag
Posted 1 Jun 2008 - 1:24pm

I wonder if there is a predictable way to build language specific features in OT.
I built an Arabic font with ligatures put in rlig for Arabic and in dlig for optional general use. Only Indesign behaves as expected and in MS Office and...

Ligature after a space
Posted 29 Aug 2007 - 10:23pm

I want to create a ligature which only appears after a space (replacing the characters AND the space) so it's not contextual and easy to make.
But I also want it to appear at the beginning of the line or after a Tab (no space). How do...

ZWJ and ZWNJ signs
Posted 26 Nov 2005 - 7:45pm

Some glyphs such as Unicode points 200C 200D 200E 200F 202C 202D 202E have some signs that shouldn't be visible in the text.
How can I make them invisible in font making?

PostScript Type1 problem with FontLab
Posted 13 Aug 2005 - 9:38am

I have an old font which says it's Postscript Type 1 but when opened in FontLab, no glyph is showing. It does show its characthers in FontBook though (Macintosh) and if I install it, it will be placed in font folder of Classic OS.

IE and mirroring characters
Posted 26 Jun 2005 - 2:05pm

There seems to be a problem with IE in implementing 'mirroring' effect to characters such as parenthesis in rtl context. My font has this problem in rtl along many others. However, it seems to be a solution because MS fonts containing rtl...

Tiger kills AAT!
Posted 7 May 2005 - 2:45pm

Mac OS 10.4 now translates some OpenType features into its AAT environment but not all of them. Notably contextual features are missing. So any .otf or .ttf with OT enhancement for languages such as Arabic are still unusable on Tiger because...

Arabic preview in Font Book
Posted 24 Apr 2005 - 8:28am

I made an Arabic TTF with AAT for Mac which also includes Roman char range.
I want to have Arabic char samples in preview of Font Book (as default and not custom set in Font Book) but...

Kerning in rtl
Posted 7 Feb 2005 - 6:43pm

I’m new here.
I’m using FontLab to create OT kern table for a rtl (PersoArabic) font. Everything goes well except that kerning value, positive or negative, is applied to the right sidebearing of...
