Electric Bicycle Company Text Font
Posted 18 Dec 2014 - 11:50am

I was working on a logo for an electric bicycle company and after drawing the few glyphs needed for the logo, I thought it would be interesting to flesh out the whole font. I was thinking that making the tops and bottoms of the glyphs line up...

Copying Figure Kerning Information
Posted 26 Oct 2014 - 11:56am

I am editing an existing font family that had proportional old style figures as the default and a feature for tabular lining. My client wants those switched so that tabular lining is the default and proportional old style the feature.

InDesign Hinting Weirdness
Posted 29 Aug 2013 - 9:33am

I've been working on a sans serif medium weight text font -- I've been proofing it roughly in illustrator (mac platform) and been pretty happy. I'm getting close to finished now and started looking at it in InDesign. And the hinting is just crazy...

Working With Older Fonts with FL 5.1
Posted 28 Jun 2013 - 1:50pm

I have been asked to do some minor edits to an older font I produced in FL 5.0. I had to do these edits in FL 5.1 since my new operating system won't run the older FL 5.o. Trying to generate the font I now get "languagesystem statements" errors.

XOX Kerning Problem
Posted 26 Mar 2013 - 1:22pm

I'm checking the kerning of an OT font that I thought was close to finished. Everything looked to be working well in Illustrator and InDesign except the OX and ox combination don't kern. XO and xo combinations kern in. But OX and ox don't. I just...

Pasting Text into Metrics Windows Sometimes Turns into Chinese
Posted 22 Mar 2013 - 10:22am

It's weird. It doesn't happen all the time but enough to be really frustrating. When I paste a string of latin text into the metrics window, about 30% of the time that text will paste in as a string of chinese text instead.

I am using FL 5.1.2...

Class Kerning Discrepancy
Posted 30 May 2012 - 1:35pm

I'm putting together an OpenType font with a lot of glyphs. Extended Latin, Small Caps, OS and Proportional Figures. I have the class kerning worked out to my satisfaction and my VFB file has 1,061 pairs.

After I generate the OTF and open that...

Competing Liga and Smcp Features
Posted 20 Apr 2012 - 6:35pm

I am developing a font with ligatures and small caps. I have the Liga and Smcp features working nicely by themselves. But while testing, if I convert a word that contains a ligature to small caps, the ligature remains and the rest of the glyphs are...

Disappearing OT Classes
Posted 10 Mar 2010 - 11:29am

Twice now, while working on Kerning Classes, my OT classes have completely disappeared.

Am I doing something to cause this to happen?

I am not selecting all OT classes and clicking on the "please delete all my hard work please, thank you...

Naming Small Cap Alternate Glyphs
Posted 27 Jan 2010 - 1:54pm

The font I am working on has several stylistic alternate caps.

I know how to name these. For example the A alternate would be A.salt

I want my small caps to have the same alternates. What is the best way to name these glyphs?

Nudgewink Released
Posted 5 Jan 2010 - 12:44pm

I started goofing around with these letterforms after looking at a collection of early 60's rock 'n' roll album covers.

Nudgewink's baseline bounces around randomly but if...

Extreme Nodes or Not
Posted 5 Dec 2009 - 8:41pm

I understand that "Nodes at Extremes" are a necessary part of hinting.

And though I do NOT understand the subtleties of hinting (I just click F7) putting nodes at extremes has broadly become the way I draw most curves anyway.

When my...

Need to Generate Mac PostScript Type 1 with FontLab
Posted 12 Nov 2009 - 10:48am

I know it is being depreciated but I need to generate a large font family in Mac PostScript Type 1 format.

And none of the current family members are named Plain, Italic, Bold or Bold Italic.

I remember seeing this discussed here before...

Disappearing Euro in Old Type One Font
Posted 10 Nov 2009 - 12:18pm

I am having trouble with a PS Type 1 font I built in Fontographer nine or ten years ago.

I was advised to put the Euro glyph in the place of "currency" symbol (unicode 00A4).

Shift-Option-2 used to bring up my Euro glyph just fine. I...

Somewhere between the Louvre and Sacre Coeur we stumbled on to the ...

Simple Contextual Substitutions
Posted 21 Nov 2008 - 12:02pm

I am setting up a font that I hope will look somewhat hand written when set. I have a stylistic alternate for every glyph with just slight changes in hand variance and attitude.

I would like to set up an OT feature where whenever two of the...

Unicode for Ligatures
Posted 8 Oct 2008 - 11:25am

I am developing a font with a few odd ligatures. Things like f_y and f_f_y.

The OT ligature substitution feature seems to be working just fine in my OpenType PS generation for the mac.

Do I need to figure out unicodes for these glyphs?...

Font Test Drive
Posted 10 Oct 2008 - 7:55pm

I put Bancroft together years ago with fontographer. I'm in the process of updating it with FontLab to take advantage of the OpenType features. Small caps, OS figures and lots of lower case ligatures.

I am afraid the finer points of OT...

What t_f ?
Posted 23 Sep 2008 - 6:42pm

I have been playing with a font with a bunch of ligatures. I have compiled the ot features as I've gone along and it has been smooth.

Suddenly, I am getting this when I compile. How do I use this information to fix the problem???

Nodes at Extremes Problems
Posted 13 Nov 2007 - 8:50am

How necessary is it to always have nodes at extremes of all glyphs?

I have always put nodes at extremes and made the right extreme node the startpoint.

But when I try to put a node at the extreme of this shape (right leg of "V" & "W...

OT Laconic in Progress
Posted 20 Sep 2007 - 3:37pm

I’m trying to understand the ins and outs of producing proper OpenType fonts. And it’s looking like a damned long, time consuming process.

So I am just throwing this font out there…

Unicode for Tabular Figures

Adobe OT PS Standard Names (CFF)
Posted 13 Feb 2007 - 11:35am

I am building an OpenType font and right now I am using the "Adobe OT PS Standard Names (CFF)" ecoding table...

Most of the glyphs make sense to me... but I am not sure what a "colonmonetary" or "onefitted" glyp should look like.

Laconic Beginning
Posted 25 Jan 2007 - 4:58pm

This font started off as a few glyphs for a logo design. I thought it was interesting enough to flesh out the rest of the design in my spare time... but now I am to the point of pouring it into FontLab and starting the lighter and bolder weights....

X-tra Small Caps in Open Type
Posted 14 Jul 2006 - 5:39pm

Clarise is a type one font I created a couple years ago with Fontographer. It has a regular book version, a small cap book version and an x-tra small cap book version where the small caps matched the x-height.

I am moving on to Open Type and...
